We keep waiting for a smarter tool to fix our workflow. But a smarter tool with nothing connected to it is just a faster way to be stuck.
Every few months a new model arrives with the same promise: this one will finally do the work for you. You switch, you wait, and the output is roughly what it was before. Slightly better written. Still stuck on the same step.
The reason is rarely the model. It is that the model can only see what you have connected to it. If it cannot read your files or look at the page you are staring at, no amount of extra intelligence closes that gap.
The useful mental model is sockets. A computer with no ports is a very fast computer that can do nothing you actually need.
That is why the small, unglamorous connectors matter more than they look. A way to reach a browser. A way to read the project folder. Individually boring; together, they are the difference between a toy that answers questions and a tool that finishes a piece of work.
So the question before your next upgrade is not which model but what is plugged into it. Most people answer that with an empty list.
Money works exactly the same way, and the failure looks identical.
People install a budgeting app, look at it for eleven minutes, and quit — not because the app is bad, but because nothing is plugged in. No subscriptions listed. No recurring bills. An empty screen is an empty answer, no matter how clever the charts behind it are.
For money, being plugged in is unglamorous and takes one sitting: put in the subscriptions that leave every month whether you think about them or not, the bills that repeat, and what you already know about this month's income.
From then on the value is not in the app being smart. It is in the app being connected — each charge you add is one more thing the picture can explain, until the month stops being a surprise.
